Advice for future students

The online section of Business writing was pretty crazy here are some things that might help you with your time spent in English 304.

1. Attend the cohort meetings in SecondLife. Not only do they help out with daily grades, but it helps you touch base and remember what you have to for the class. A lot of times you forget because you don't actually meet as a class, but the meetings once a week helps.

2. Do the blog entries. They are easy and don't take much time. and its 10 % of your grade.

3. Go to Mrs. Rogers if you have any problems, she is understanding and will help you without making you feel dumb for not necessarily knowing whats going on.

4. The group that you are in really is a big deal because you do a lot of work with them. choose wisely if you can.

5. Be as creative as you can. This class can be fun if you make it fun.

6. Do whats asked of you and you will most likely get a good grade.

Paper vs. Web

There are many similarities to writing on paper and writing on the web. Both are ways to communicate and both take time, thought, editing and hard work.
Although there are many similarities there are also very many differences. Obviously on the web written works are much easier to access, send, share, and view. Editing is a much easier process on the web. Writing stored online keeps things cleaner and less cluttered because there are less hard copies lying around. While I might think this is an easier way of keeping things, some people like having the hard copies' on hand.
I think it is easier on the eyes to read off of a paper rather than a computer screen. Saving paper is a big thing that the web has done. We don't have to cut as many trees down now to make paper which is good for the environment.

Lying on Resumes

I found a lot of information on George O'Leary The former Notre Dame coach who was forced to resign after it was found out that he lied on his resume. Mr O'Leary Lead Notre Dame to believe that he lettered in football at Delaware university. When Notre Dame found out that this was not true, they felt like they had to let him go.
I also found that its pretty common for people to lie on there resume. When you really want a job it is tempting to exaggerate the truth sometime. Think about being hired for something that wasn't true. It wouldn't be worth losing your job or the fear of your lies might be let out one day. It basically comes down to lying on your resume is not worth it, and doing anything to get ahead that is untruthfully should be avoided at all costs. You will never have to worry about your reputation if you aren't risking it.

Ethical delima

Burglars broke into the Democratic Party's National Committee offices on June 17, 1972. Watergate is a general term for a series of political scandals during the presidency of Richard Nixon that began with five men being arrested after breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters.
After going through two years of mounting evidence against the President and his staff, which included former staff members testifying against them in a Senate investigation, it was revealed that Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices and that he had recorded many conversations. Undeniable evidence, spoken by Nixon and recorded on tape, revealed that he had obstructed justice and attempted to cover up the break-in.
Watergate happened some time ago, but the concept of staying informed and ahead of the competition will always be temptation that will cause some of us to stumble. When people are put in positions of power many times they'll do all they can to stay there, ethical or not. Covering up what was already done only dug Nixon and his administration deeper.

Ethical distractions

It seems like every month there is a new scandal that hits the public light.(enron) I am some what surprised by this, but then I think about the people I live around and see all the time. People will naturally do what they can to get ahead. If that means cheating on a test or moving a decimal over things like this are more than likely going to happen.
It's like there is something inside all of us that will take advantage of cretin situations if they are presented to us. I don't necessarily think that makes up bad people, but its just human nature.
I think that companies and businesses need to take better measures to set themselves up for success and not allowing people to take advantage of them. Trusting people is good but its just not something a company can do. I think that businesses can go about this by having people checked off by coworkers and other measures such as this.

Mountain Music

I spent this weekend up right outside of Asheville at a camp called Windy gap. The camp needed me to come up and run the zip line for men’s weekend, so I spent my Saturday watching old men zoom down a wire into freezing cold water. It was rather hysterical. I went to help out, but the real reason I went was to slow down a little bit. My life sometimes feels like everything is going one hundred miles an hour. I left Clemson at 11 on Friday night and got there around 1 o’clock and as soon I drove into camp I felt like a burden was lifted.

I didn’t think about school the entire weekend until of course about an hour ago and it was so refreshing.

Water Sports

Our company is going to be a water sports business. We would like to be located in or next to a resort in Key West. We will offer a wide variety of water sports including surfing, windsurfing, snorkeling, jet ski rental, para sailing, wake boarding, and skiing. we will also have a store that sells surf boards, bathing suits, sun screen, and flip flops. We are targeting tourist families mainly during the months of June, July, and August, bus since the weather is hot all year long we will be prepared to work all year.
We are looking forward to starting up this business and hope that it is a success.

Interview

I had no idea what to expect for the interview. I have never interviewed for a job, much less interviewed for a job over the computer, so this was foreign territory for me. I realized that I need to be more prepared for any question. The zinger (really hard last question) stumped me a little bit. So preparation is something that wouldn't hurt. I also need to be ready to ask a good question. I think confidence and preparation are the two most important things for an interview, as well as what I need to work on the most. I think I did alright for my first go at it, but there is always room for improvement.

It feels great to be loved!

I celebrated my 20th birthday weekend, and man what a great time I had. I really don't liking making a big deal out of my birthday, but my friends decided that they had to do something, so we had breakfast together on Friday.
My Roommate and neighbor invited a lot of close friends and we caught up while eating egg casserole and french toast. Starting off your day by sharing a meal with friends really sets things off right.
Sharing long telephone calls with friends that maybe you haven't heard from in awhile, and conversations with those you see everyday; whatever it may be talking with those people usually leaves me in a good mood.
The affect that my friends have on me makes me want to do the same to them, as well as find new people that I can make feel this way. This year I have tried to focus on the quality rather than the quantity of friendship, and I have found that it is much more satisfying. I have really developed some great friendships this year.
So I will continue to peruse existing and new friendships because there are few thing that are better than community in this world.

Cover Letters?

The Idea of cover letters is new to me because I have not yet entered the business world. Before the mention on cover letters I thought that a resume followed by an interview, and maybe a follow up interview was all that it took to get hired. I've realized that you can let the interviewer know more about you in the cover letter, like example of success stories in the past.

I thought that the ideas on how to write a good cover letter were pretty helpful. I agreed with pretty much everything in the tutorials. Using a checklist on the cover letter is a very good Idea. Using this gives you the opportunity not to leave anything out. Writing a "post script " also stood out to me. I wouldn't have thought to do this in a cover letter but if if make you stand out more to the employer, then thats good stuff. I believe that the possible employer would read the P.S. first.

online interviews

Interviews Online could possible work for some jobs, but I don't see it working for most jobs.
This might be a good idea for some jobs that are for tech poisons. For most jobs Normal face to face interviews will never go away. I think that it is important to meet face to face to really get a good view of the person.
Face to face interaction is very important for interviews. Both the interviewers and the person seeking the job get a good idea of each other when they meet face to face. With most jobs personal face to face contact happens everyday, so it is only natural that interviews should be conducted face to face rather than online.
This might eventually catch on but i think it is somewhat ridiculous.

persuasion; selling ketchup popsicles to ladies in gloves

Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letters from a Birmingham Jail" is a very moving letter and uses extraordinary persuasion to voice his opinions on the way the situation things where in should be handled. He is very respectful, but he doesn't compromise what he truly feels needs to be done. MLK uses quotes from T.S. Elliot to draw credibility and provide points that would otherwise be only his own.
MLK used information that he knew and understood to back his opinions and support his material.
A company that I would really like to work in the Marketing department for would be Patagonia. Patagonia is a company that Makes outdoor clothing with the environment in mind. The way they persuade the public that they have a clean brand of clothing really impresses me. Whether what they claim is true or not they way they market their products is great. Patagonia persuades its customers to buy products even though they might be a little more expensive. The methods the company uses include highlighting the environmental good the company has done , as well as pushing its research in recycling clothing to improve resource responsibility.
In some ways MLK and Patagonia are similar they both take information they know about and highlight it and try to and persuade people to believe in what they are about. Mostly they are different though because Selling cloths and persuading people about a social movement are two very different things.

In ten years

It's hard to say where I'll be ten years from now. I hope whatever it is I'll be happy.

Hopefully I'll have graduated from Clemson University in 4 or 4 and a half years possibly go on to grad school in business or marketing.

I know after college and before work I'd like to do some mission work abroad. Right now I think that I'll be in south America for a couple years, but I'm not positive, but with my language skills it looks like something south of the border.

I'd like to have a wife and maybe a couple years of marriage out of the way. By this time in my life I hope I have traveled a good bit. Maybe my wife and I will be living in Seattle or Northern California. I'd like to have kids eventually so maybe a kid or two on the way, but I wouldn't mind waiting a little longer before having children. I really want to live a little before our lives are all about another life.

I would be nice to have a job that didn't tie me down to a certain part of the country/ long hours. I'd like to do something where I traveled with my wife, and could be creative. I don't really want my job to define me. I know it's natural for older men to talk about what they do for a living, but I don't know if that will ever interest me. So a goal for a job would be something that pays well enough to live comfortably and something that interests me enough to not to hate waking up in the morning.

In ten years I hope that I am happy and doing what ever I find fulfilling.

Digital Ethnoligy

Web 2.0

Digital ethnology is a very appropriate title to this video. Ethnology is the combination of technology and the word ethos which refers to people. The internet is made and updated by people. Anyone who is entering the work place would benefit greatly from being familiar with the web and how its works and changes. Rethinking everything is something that we have do every so often to keep up with the changes.
I’ve never really thought about how the internet worked. The Code and language on the internet is very fascinating.
Information to anything you could imagine is online. Truth, lies, things for sale, games and even potential girl friends are just examples of things you can find.
The purpose of the internet is to make things easier for people, and to continue to make things easier in the future. It’s always changing and growing/ getting better.

My name is Rob, and my last name is not Destiny. Robie Destiny is my SL name and I really liked it. I’m a sophomore marketing major from Greer, South Carolina.

I like doing most things outside such as mountain biking, kayaking, both snow and water skiing, and a recent favorite snowball fighting. I really like going to concerts and seeing live music. I recently have become a big fan of Asheville, North Carolina because of the music scene.

I really love being here at Clemson. I have made some wonderful friends and have learned a lot about myself in the process.
